EDUC 638

Hello everyone. My name is Alexandra May, but my friends and family call me Ali. I was born and raised in Tennessee, which is where I currently live. I have a sister who is 3 years older than I am, and she teaches 9th grade algebra at our local high school. She is also the head softball coach and assistant volleyball coach there. My mom works as an accountant at a hospital in a nearby county. My hobbies and interests include almost any outdoor activity such as kayaking, four wheeler riding, and nature walks. I also play volleyball and slow pitch softball in a recreational league. Having grown up on a farm, I have developed a love for animals of all kinds. I have a 3 year old dog named Xena who loves to run and play. My specific degree is a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an Educational Technology Cognate. I am currently teaching kindergarten in a Title 1 school. I am also the assistant softball coach at our high school, so my sister and I coach together. A verse that I relate to my role as an educator and coach is Proverbs 22:6 which states, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” In my teacher role, I not only teach my students the required content, but I also try my best to teach them life lessons. For example, I recently read a book that talks about having a kind heart. I also try to teach life lessons in my coaching role as well, such as you will not always win but you can find a positive and learn from your loss. After this course, I have 6 more courses to complete before graduation, so I am hoping to graduate at the end of the fall semester. I am unsure if I will pursue a new job after completing this degree at this time because I have grown to love kindergarten. However, I am hoping that it opens up new opportunities for me if I wish to seek a new role in the school system. As of right now, I am choosing to put a hold on my education after completing this program. From this course, I would like to learn how leadership in educational technology can be brought to and dispersed throughout elementary schools. Our local high school is 1:1 with technology, however, our elementary teachers only receive a set of 4 Chromebooks to use with the whole class. With that being said, how can I transform my class’ learning through technology with minimal supplies? I am hoping that this leadership class will give me insight to a solution to giving my students excellent learning opportunities using the technology that my school district can provide. If my life were a movie, I would want Reese Witherspoon to play me. One reason I chose her is because I like her character in almost every movie she is in, and she plays in some of my favorites. Another reason is because she typically plays level-headed but strong-willed characters and those are qualities that I believe I have to an extent.
